The Core Pathway: Learning to Follow Jesus Together

Core Discipleship is built on a simple conviction: discipleship is not something we merely study. It is something we learn to live—and learn to reproduce—together.

People around the world have been conditioned to think about learning through familiar structures. In school, we take classes and courses. At work, we receive training. In the church, we participate in Bible studies, classes, and programs.

These experiences shape our expectations. Someone teaches. We listen and learn. We complete what is required. Eventually, we move on.

These structures can be useful for education and training. But biblical discipleship is fundamentally different.

Jesus did not call people to take a course about following Him. He called them to follow Him.

His disciples learned by being with Him, listening to Him, watching Him, asking questions, practicing what He taught, receiving correction, serving alongside Him, and eventually doing what He had taught them to do.

The Core Pathway seeks to recover this kind of discipleship.

The Core Pathway is a relational discipleship experience designed to form disciples who can make disciples.

The Pathway includes Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and the Master’s Community. But these are not simply levels in an educational program. They are stages within an ongoing process of discipleship and multiplication.

• There is teaching, but teaching is not the whole activity.
• There is learning, but learning is not merely receiving information.
• There is curriculum, but the curriculum is not the objective.
• There is structure, but disciples are not simply moving through a program.
• There is evaluation, but the goal is not academic achievement.

We learn Scripture together. We ask questions, listen to one another, pray, discuss, practice, and apply what we are learning. The trainer is not simply delivering information, and the disciple is not merely receiving it. We are learning together in relationship.

The Core Pathway is neither simply academic nor simply vocational. It brings learning and practice together. Scripture provides the foundation for what we learn, while relationship and obedience provide the environment in which that learning becomes life.

We do not provide a course about discipleship. We provide an environment in which disciples learn to follow Jesus and make disciples by doing it together.

This is why the Core Pathway can be understood as a discipleship apprenticeship—a relational environment where we learn, practice, and reproduce the way of Jesus together.

An apprenticeship is different from conventional education. An apprentice does not merely study the work. The apprentice watches, participates, practices, receives guidance, grows in competence, and eventually helps others do the same.

In the same way, Core disciples are being discipled while learning to disciple others.

This begins in Basic.

From the beginning, disciples are encouraged to begin praying for two or three people they can disciple. As they learn to follow Jesus, they are also learning how to help someone else follow Jesus.

Ideally, by the end of Basic, each disciple is prepared to launch his or her own Core Group.

Multiplication, therefore, is not something added after discipleship has been completed. Multiplication is woven into discipleship from the beginning.

The goal is not simply that someone completes Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced. The goal is that the disciple is increasingly formed into someone who can faithfully follow Jesus, walk with others, make disciples, and help those disciples become disciple-makers themselves.

The Core Pathway is not something you simply take. It is something you enter and live.

It is a relational apprenticeship in the way of Jesus—where we learn Scripture together, practice what Jesus teaches, learn from one another, and, as we grow, begin helping others follow Jesus in the same way.

Ultimately, Core Discipleship is a discipleship apprenticeship in which every disciple is learning to become a disciple-maker.

The goal is not completion.

The goal is reproduction.
